I was trying to come up with a theme for a holiday entry (mostly as an excuse to post some pics) when I realized that this Christmas brought some interesting surprises. One of the first surprises was delivered by yours truly. I was trying to come up with the perfect Christmas present for my dad or, at least, something a little different. Then I found it: a sonic screwdriver that was a real screwdriver! And my dad (who's now a big Doctor Who fan) was suitably impressed. Unfortunately, he wasn't around when I finally remembered to take a picture, so my insane grinning brother (who failed to look at all serious) ended up modelling the present for me:
Little did I realize that my dad had his own surprise lying in wait. After I had opened all my other presents, he pulled out this long white box from under the couch -- a box that took up almost its entire length. With some trepidation (and a certain amount of struggling), I opened the mystery box and found a sword inside! I kid you not. My dad bought me a sword. Below is a picture my sister took of me and the sword after Christmas dinner (which is why I'm still wearing the paper crown from my cracker):
The next picture isn't a surprise at all, but revenge for the previous picture. My brother and sister received all of this Vancouver 2010 Olympic gear, which they insisted on wearing as much as possible. Uh, I'm pretty sure they're adopted, no matter how much proof there is to the contrary:
Not even the cats were safe from the surprise gift-giving spree. Santa brought them a couple of mechanical hamsters and a track.
Minerva really liked this present.
Lastly, but certainly not leastly, dubghall sent me this extremely timely and thoughtful gift:
enough to write an inscription on the inside, which means even more to me than the quote. :-)
I hope the rest of you received some pleasant surprises over the holidays too!
